OBSERVATION · 4 MIN

Reading an open landscape

Start with the horizon. Then look for the things that interrupt it: a line of trees, a change in texture, a low ridge. A useful field note records relationships before it records names.

Write down the light, the direction of the wind and one detail you would otherwise forget. A few precise observations often tell more than a page of general impressions.

A map can stay simple

Not every map needs every detail. For a sketch, keep the starting point, the main turns and a few landmarks. Mark uncertain sections as uncertain; leave space for the next visit.

The point is to remember how a place fits together. Colour and scale can help, but clear labels do most of the work.
